Learning From Buffalo’s Experience

UJTF recently met with Micaela Shapiro-Shellaby and Allison Duwe from the Coalition for Economic Justice in Buffalo, N.Y. In January 2010, the C.E.J. helped to create the Canal Side Community Alliance, a large coalition of groups working to negotiate a CBA for the development project for Buffalo’s harbor.

The opening skirmish of the Buffalo fight was stopping the powers-that-be from ramming a Bass Pro store into the harbor area and bestowing lots of tax benefits on this serial corporate-welfare recipient. The Public Accountability Initiative has written a great report on the Buffalo group’s efforts entitled “Fishing For Taxpayer Cash.” Check it out here.
